AUSTIN MILLER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Austin Miller was a talented and creative young man who attended the 2006 Project Youth Doc program, part of his inspiration to become a filmmaker. On February 11, 2008 15-year-old Austin was killed while riding his bicycle home from high school in Beaverton.

In memory of Austin and his inimitable spirit, Film Action has established the Austin Miller Scholarship Fund to support other youth attending Film Action's educational programs.

A special showing of the rare youth-created, shot-by-shot remake titled Raiders of the Lost Ark: Adaptation was screened on April 18 & 19. Funds from this screening provided nearly $10,000 to support Project Youth Doc students for summer 2008 through the Austin Miller Scholarship Fund. Click here to learn more.

PALM TREES IN HOLLYWOOD?!

You may have noticed a significant change in the look of the Hollywood Theatre along Sandy Boulevard. Yes, you saw right! We now have palm trees!

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

What was wrong with the old trees?
Well, the non-native maple trees continually lifted up our sidewalks with their shallow roots and even damaged some of our terracotta roof tiles with their limbs. They also hid many architectural features of the historic Hollywood Theatre - now you can really see the elegant curve of the"bowl" of the back of the Theatre's auditoriums!

Will palm trees grow in Portland?
Yes, they will! These are Chinese Windmill Palms (trachycarpus fortunei) that are found all over the Pacific Rim. There are beautiful specimens on the Pacific coast (including ones on Vancouver Island, BC). Portland already has its own share of thriving palms - check out the ones at the fitness center on NE Broadway and 27th or down in Chinatown!

Why palm trees?
Simply put, the Hollywood District was named after the Hollywood Theatre and the Theatre was named for the film industry in - you guessed it - Hollywood, California! The palms evoke this heritage as well as the Mediterranean inspired feel of the building. Also, the root balls of palms will not undermine the sidewalks and their canopies will not detract from the view of the building.
